The king cake originated in the 18th century and was brought to the United States by French and Spanish colonists. The king cake takes its name from from the biblical three kings, who journeyed to Bethlehem bearing gifts upon the arrival of baby Jesus. Traditionally, a small pea was baked within the cake to represent baby Jesus. However, the traditions have adapted over the years and now the baby sits right on top of the cake so he's easy to find!
